MBC Announces Recipients of the 2023 MBC Wanda B. Jeffress Memorial STEM-H Scholarship

August 25, 2023 (South Boston, Virginia) – Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corporation is proud to announce the recipients of the 2023 MBC Wanda B. Jeffress Memorial STEM-H Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding Halifax County High School students who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and achievement in high school and have a goal of pursuing a career in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Health Sciences (STEM-H).

MBC is pleased to recognize Sara Mahecha and Gabrielle Shelton as this year’s scholarship recipients. These individuals have displayed commitment to academics, extracurricular activites, and volunteerism, and have demonstrated a vision to making a positive impact on the world through their academic pursuits and career goals.

Sara Mahecha

Sara Mahecha plans to major in dental hygiene at Danville Community College. Her career goal is to work in the field of pediatric dentistry, helping children from diverse cultures and backgrounds improve their oral health.

Gabrielle Shelton

Gabrielle Shelton plans to attend Radford University to major in computer science. Her goal is to become a software engineer with a mission to create optimized, more user-friendly software solutions to enable better efficiencies for businesses.

MBC congratulates Sara and Gabrielle on their remarkable achievements and wishes them continued success in their academic journeys and future endeavors.

About the scholarship


A very active community leader, Wanda served on numerous boards and organizations including Board of Directors for Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corporation. MBC established this scholarship in memoriam to honor her legacy by reinvesting in the STEM-H education of Halifax County students. To date, this scholarship has awarded $30,000 to Halifax County students pursuing careers in STEM-H fields.
