As an economic driver in the Southern Virginia region and a technology company that understands the critical shortage of STEM-prepared students for future employment, MBC has invested more than $300,000 in FIRST Robotics Competition (or FRC) programs since 2012. We currently sponsor all eleven FIRST Robotics Competition teams located in Southern Virginia and are working to get more teams in the region involved in the FRC program. The eleven teams in Southern Virginia are:
Halifax County High School Cometbots 977 – South Boston, VA Piedmont Governor’s School STAGS 1262 – Martinsville, VA Bluestone High School Skrappy’s Zoo 1413 – Skipwith, VA G.W. High School Team Talon 1598 – Danville, VA Martinsville High School MADawgs 3258 – Martinsville, VA Altavista High School Bionic Eagles 5279 – Altavista, VA Tunstall High School Trojans 5950 – Dry Fork, VA Central High School Portable Chargers 5954 – Victoria, VA Sussex Central High School Team T.I.G.E.R.S. 6021 – Sussex, VA Amelia County High School Cyber Raiders 6189 – Amelia Court House, VA Cumberland High School Aftershocks 6194 – Cumberland, VA
FRC teaches hard skills, such as programming, coding, and electronics, and soft skills, such as communication and teamwork. These skill sets are critical for all students, whether they plan to further their education with a certificate program that spans a few months or continue their studies at a 4-year institution of learning. These STEM and soft skills taught in FRC are highly desirable to current and prospective employers in Southern Virginia, and thereby facilitate the fulfillment of STEM careers by students in our region.
MBC is committed to providing economic development leadership to Southern Virginia by operating nearly 2,000 miles of open-access fiber optic network, providing wholesale telecommunications transport, dark fiber and colocation services. With presence in major internet peering exchange points, MBC reduces the cost of Internet access for wholesale customers and reduces the time and cost to reach customers in rural Virginia markets. MBC’s network supports job creation as a critical element in the recruitment of major commercial investments.
