The Southern Virginia Education Network Comes to the Aid of the Halifax County Public Schools
May 8th, 2008
The Southern Virginia Education Network (SVEN) [being built by Public Education of South Central Virginia for Public Education of South Central Virginia on the MBC’s fiber backbone was able to help the Halifax County Public Schools as Network Virginia had a router outage on SprintLink resulting in their having no internet connectivity yesterday. HCPS called with a request for help yesterday morning.
The SVEN Team at the HEC was able to reroute the HCPS gateway over the SVENetwork and Glen Ratliff of GCR Company (a locally owned ISP in South Boston) donated bandwidth access to the Internet. This was not a perfect solution as HCPS’s external pointers were still pointed to Sprintlink but, HCPS reported today that the temporary solution meet the needs of the majority of their users including SOL practice testing from the DOE website. With a full rollout of SVEN, redundant access to the internet could be solved.
